You know that feeling... Your heart starts racing, body temperature rises, butterflies in the stomach; every sense is on high alert. You've just seen someone that piques your interest. And you're hoping on some level that the feeling is mutual. Attraction is a powerful thing. There's no other force like it in the universe, whether it has to do with astral bodies or human beings. It's completely undeniable.
We seldom think about the root cause of why we're attracted to certain people, but not others. It's all about biology. Attraction has a very practical function; to ensure the perpetuation of our species. In our slightly evolved state, we tend to forget this. We think we're attracted to someone because of their profession, material possessions or other external factors. But truth be told, if we truly find someone attractive, it's due to lust, plain and simple. On a genetic level, we've discovered someone who's a good match for us. And all of this happens quite naturally, without any real effort on our part.
Since the foundation of attraction is based on biology, we can rest assured that if a person rejects us, it's nothing personal. The most important component of attraction is chemistry. This is something that is either present the moment you meet someone, or it's not. And what exactly is chemistry? It's an immediate connection that you feel for someone, with lust being an integral part of it.
Love At First Sight:
Does love at first sight really exist? In my opinion, no. Lust at first sight is more probable. Also, an immediate connection based on more than physical attraction can sometimes occur. But love is something that takes a good deal of time to develop. It requires better knowledge of who that person is. And in order for love to mature, a strong emotional and mental bond becomes more important than mere physical attraction.
What Really Happens When You "Fall in Love":
Due to popular culture, we've been led to believe that it's possible to "fall in love" with a person. But this phrase is misleading. What is really happening, is that we're giddy with lust. Biology has kicked into high gear and our judgment is not as keen as we think it is. This is called the "honeymoon period" of a relationship. Everything seems to be going exactly as we would like, but even if it's not perfect, we'll gloss it over and forgive all trespasses. All of this is due to biology and hormones. It has very little to do with real love.
Friendship Between Opposite Genders:
Based on personal experience, I don't believe that it's possible for men and women to be platonic if there is any degree of sexual attraction. As the friendship deepens, a true sense of love can develop. Therefore, it is next to impossible that a person who is attracted to their friend emotionally, mentally and physically, would not desire more than just friendship. It would be natural for them to want to take the relationship to the next level.
Why Opposites Attract:
Perhaps the most potent of all, my theory is that opposites attract due to the strongest type of biological imperative that exists. This form of attraction is highly physical, thus ensuring a better chance of successful mating. But opposites attract for other reasons as well. They are desirable because they embody mystery. They can also bring out certain parts of our personalities that we didn't know existed, which makes this sort of connection highly charged and exciting, with the potential for self-discovery.
